Serato was lucky enough to head to a recent gig that ?uestlove organised earlier this year called Philadelphia Sound Konnoiseurs.
The lineup was incredible, boasting Diplo, J Rocc, DJ Spinna, Jazzy Jeff and ?uestlove all in one club for one night. It’s not often that all of these people can be in the same city for the same gig, and with so many different styles of music at their fingertips, anything was possible.
We caught some of that infamous night on camera, with all the DJs talking about the vibe of playing together, their different styles and about records.- Serato
id Sis recently got in the studio with Riff Raff to jump on a track produced by Sinden and 5kinandbone5, and you can check the results above. Suffice it to say, theybrought the rice out. Stay tuned for Kid Sister’s new EP!- FG
The BEVMO_SJ crew presents: The 4 Lokos Mixtape. Pop this sucker in and be prepared to act like you drank and had a long night with a 4 Loko. (No 4Lokos were used in the creation of this mix o_O). Just like our Assorted Flavors mixtape, each crew member presented a different style, but the theme of this mixtape was “party rockin/club/dance/top40” - from fist pumpin, shakin your booty, or gettin down and dirty, this mixtape will take you there. Enjoy!
James Pants—Tyler, The Creator muse and electronic wunderkind—meet Fool’s Gold. Fool’s Gold—summer staple and Afro-beat tribesmen—meet James Pants. Now that we’re all acquainted, think you guys could get together on “Street Clothes” and go all tiki-jazz on the joint in anticipation for Fool’s Gold’s new tour, starting Sept. 13, and to urge fans to pick up the superbly tropical Leave No Trace on IAMSOUND? Oh, you already did that? Well, much appreciated then.- RCRD LBL
@Bevmo_SJ (R-Cade, myself, Shea & SmoovGroovs) is taking over the Bay Area on Labor Day weekend! We’re releasing our long awaited mixtape “4 Lokos”. Similar to Assorted Flavors except on this mix we’re catering to all you party people. Even though school is about to start that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, right? So bump this on your study sessions for the ultimate distraction. We’re only printing a limited copy of this mix so get yours while supplies last. Shout outs to Pudge for always lacing us up with the dope visuals. Support good music from quality deejays. #NuffSaid
Rick & Ray is back with their monthly get down, LIFESWELL, on Thursday at Blu Monkey. When I think about how we’re already in the 8th month of throwing this party, I realize that the year has gone by really fast…Anyways, we have two guest DJs to help us soundtrack the night - Dstrukt and Destroyer.
Representing San Jose and Lakewood, CA, DJ Dstrukt can be heard on the world famous Wake Up Show, or running with BEVMO, Acrylick Clothing, or the Under the Table Crew. His latest mix “Work Out” currently holds the number two spot for the most played mixes on mixcrate. On Thursday, he’s going to drop a little Aaliyah tribute starting at 11:30p.
DJ Destroyer is a triple threat as DJ/producer/remixer with a resume that boasts collaborations with artists like Radiohead and De La Soul, and cosigns from names like DJ AM and Mark Ronson. He’s been in the game since the late 80s, and continues to stay on the forefront of the club/hiphop/soul music cultures with residencies at FAST FWD and Strictly Social. His set will start at 12:30a.
We’ll also be celebrating the birthdays of two of my very good friends. One you’ve seen here many times - Glen of Rhythm Natives and Rick & Ray, and the other you may have not. Her name is Samantha Jade. What these two have in common is loyalty. Loyalty in the hustle and loyalty in support. That’s hard to come by these days, so if you’re there this Thursday, buy them a drink!
I rarely do interviews but I totally support the whole Just Blame movement, so this time I made an acception. Peep my nervous interview with the Just Blame Us crew.
J.Cole’s “Work Out” is definitely on my Top 20 of 2011. Diggin the smooth melody along with the talkbox. Something def for the honey dips. I loved the song so much (especially the Paula redo towards the end) that I wanted to add my own vibe to it. I Smoothed it out a little more than the original. Thanks to the homie Shea for shooting over the acapella and making this remix possible.
1. Like A Star:“Was saving this for the 2nd album. Due to some other shit beyond my control, I’ma let this out now.” 2. Knock On Wood:“One of my fav. freestyles. OG Dreamvillains gotta be reminded, new fans gotta get put on.” 3. Pity:“Brand new J. Cole, Omen, Voli. Produced by Voli @volitheentity” 4. How High:“at one point this was guaranteed to go on The Sideline Story.” 5. Unabomber: ”Just heard this today for the first time in a longgg time. Love these raps.”
We all know Donald Glover as Troy, the conceited ex football player on the hit TV show Community. One thing that many people don’t know about him is that he’s a pretty ill MC. I’ve been checking out his “Culdesac” LP and I gotta say, it’s one of those albums I got on repeat. I give this album a thumbs up and I highly recommend you check it out. Here’s one joint that’s been on repeat “Do Ya Like”. If anybody knows who produces his beats please let me know. These beats are better than late night junk food after the club. Yadida. Peace.
No disrespect to any DJ’s but the skill level on the radio hasn’t been the same since 90’s and early 2000’s. I know very few DJ’s on the radio that I can actually consider dope. That’s what motivated me to put this mix together. I wanted to show the average DJ that you can still paint a masterpiece with a sprinkle of motivation and creativity. This was my first mix that I can actually consider “jiggy”.
(Switching gears)
Now that it’s 2011 everyone pretty has the same playlist, and It’s not the size of the itunes library, it’s how you play your music. Mucho props to the big homies @DjEcho and @Nik_Ferrer for making this possible. Shout outs to my two crews Under the Table and BEVMO for the endless support.
